yerba buena history

It used to be called "the Yerba Buena"; but nowadays it`s simply Yerba Buena. Its name refers to the excellent grass for cattle. In this area of jungle territory, lived Lules and Tafies aborigines, who were known for being great hunters as well as peasants. In 1670 the company of Jesus takes possessions of this lands and expand the territory. BY the year 1840 this settlement was "... only a dozen houses scattered along the mountains of fertile soil, a profusion of fuel wood and construction ..." said Paúl Grousac(historian). But by the middle of the century it was considered the most populated part outside the city.In 1889, the progress of Yerba Buena, required a proper planning. Several works are done and during 1901, and considering the level of urban consolidation, a local government is created. It establishes the first Commission on Health and Development. That year also raises the need to extend westwards Camino del Peru, Mate de Luna`s Av., a major urban center is originated "Villa Marcos Paz". Between 1906 and 1916 drinking water services, post office and telephone exchange services were installed. Finally in the year 1979 the municipality was created.
